Summertime festivities have officially started – camping, swimming, biking, traveling. While your activities have changed, odds are the types of food you’re eating have changed too! What wines should you pair with your favourite summertime snacks and eats? What goes well with smores or hobo pies? We’ve got everything you need to know laid out in this blog. Think of it like your go-to resource for wine pairings with your famous summertime grub.

Did someone say BBQ?

It’s no question that your BBQ is coming out of hibernation to cook up some mean meals for your family and friends. You’ve got your ribs, vegetable skewers, stuffed peppers and burgers. Each one of those pairs differently with wine.

Ribs: Stone & Sky Shiraz Petit Verdot

Burgers: LOLA Cabernet Franc/Cabernet Sauvignon

Grilled Veggies: Chardonnay Non-Oaked VQA

Over-The-Fire Treats

The fire is cracking, your guests are laughing and you can feel the warmth on your skin from the flames. Life is good and the things you’re snacking on are even better! Your campfire favourites deserve a nice wine pairing – smores, hobo pies, and hot dogs (yes, hot dogs can be paired with wine!)

Smores

Your favourite campfire treat that combines chocolate, graham cracker and marshmallow just got its first wine pairing. Sip on a glass of our J.S. Hamilton Red VQA – Shiraz Malbec Petit Verdot while you crisp up those golden ‘mallows.

If you prefer a red wine pairing, a fruit-forward and medium-bodied Malbec can be a great choice. Its dark fruit flavors and soft tannins can contrast nicely with the sweetness of the chocolate and marshmallow.

Hobo Pies

If you’ve never had a hobo pie, you’re missing out on a true camping classic. First, get yourself a hobo pie maker. Then, stock up on some bread, butter and your favourite fillings. If you’re going savoury, make a pizza, grilled cheese or breakfast hobo pie. Pair it with a Shiraz. If you’re going sweet, think, bananas and chocolate. Pair this with a Merlot.

Hot Dogs

Believe it or not, hot dogs do have a wine pairing and they pair nicely with a light Sauvignon Blanc. If you’re looking through our Pelee lineup, we suggest our Lighthouse Sauvignon Blanc VQA.

Keep Cool in the Summertime

Some other classic summertime favourites include ice cream, strawberries and watermelon. No summer seems to be fully complete without these staple items. Here’s some pairings you might like.

Ice Cream

Which ice cream flavour is your favouriite? Here are a few pairings based on the three most common flavours.

Vanilla: Lighthouse Riesling VQA

Chocolate: Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve VQA

Strawberry: LOLA Light Rosé
