Let’s Start With the Basics
Here at Pelee Island Winery, all of our VQA wines since 2017, have the following designations:
VQA – Vintners Quality Assurance: VQA assures the wine is made from 100% Ontario grown grapes. VQA is the Ontario Wine Appellation Authority, a regulatory agency responsible for maintaining the integrity of local wine appellations and enforcing winemaking and labelling standards.
Sustainable Winemaking Ontario – 2007 marked the formation of Sustainable Winemaking Ontario certification program. This program recognizes the wineries and growers that are committed to enhancing the environment by using sustainable practices in their wineries and vineyards. In 2017, a third-party audit was added to the program ensuring validity for certification. Read more about our sustainable winemaking practices here.
Vegecert – all Pelee Island Winery VQA wines since 2017, are certified vegan friendly by VegeCert meaning they are vegan friendly.
Fun Facts About the Format
The aluminum bottle and wine in metal cans is new to many but has been around for much longer than you may think.
– As early as WWI (1917) French soldiers were provided rations of wine in large metal cans (see Fig.2).
– The Guinness Book of Records recognizes the world’s largest collection of distinct wine cans owned by Alan Green. Alan is a retired vintner from California. His collection contains 574 (and counting) brands of wine in cans dating from 1936.
