J.S. Hamilton partnered with Thaddeus Smith of the Vin Villa Vineyards to establish the Pelee Island Wine and Vineyards Company in 1871. One of their most internationally well-known products was St. Augustine Communion Wine. Grape growing operations ceased on the island in 1916 until 1979. At that time, grapes were reintroduced on Pelee Island and in the early 1980’s, Pelee Island Winery was established as the winery on Pelee Island.
