Pelee Island Winery - Wine Makers
Walter Schmoranz - Winemaker and President

Considered one of Canada's winemaking pioneers, Walter Schmoranz was born in Ruedesheim Germany; one of the world's finest winemaking regions. In 1985, he joined Pelee Island Winery where his experience and skills have led to Pelee Island Winery winning hundreds of awards around the world, most notably for our 2002 Cabernet Franc Ice wine - winner of the Citadelle de France Gold Medal. Walter currently sits on the board of the VQA and heads several committees at the Wine Council of Ontario.

Martin Janz - Winemaker

Martin was born and raised in Eltville Germany. The values instilled in him by his family include a strong work ethic and a genuine appreciation for the natural environment that surrounded him, attributes that continue to define Martin today. In 1996 immediately after graduating from the Rheingau Institute of Winemaking in Germany. Martin moved to Canada to begin his winemaking career with Pelee Island Winery as Assistant Winemaker to Walter Schmoranz. Over the years he worked his way up to Winemaker and oversees the day-to-day winemaking operations and is committed to producing high-quality wines for Pelee Island Winery.

Tim Charisse - Winemaker

Tim arrived at Pelee Island Winery just in time for the 2009 harvest and has since used his determination to enhance the quality of Pelee Island Winery wines. Born in Bad Schwalbach and raised in Winkel, Germany (Rheingau), Tim's interest of winemaking has followed him from an early age. Having worked at Fritz Allendorf winery in Winkel and George Breuer in Ruedesheim, Tim brings with him a wealth of knowledge and experience. His winemaking philosophy is to make wines that are approachable, consistently excellent and display the unique characteristics of the terroir on Pelee Island.
